Hydraulic hybrid drive from Rexroth goes into series production

The HRB hydraulic hybrid from Rexroth is already in everyday use in over ten cities shortly before it goes into series production
Shortly before the official start of production in October 2010, vehicles in over ten cities in Europe and North America are on the job using the HRB Hydrostatic Regenerative System from Rexroth, mainly with municipal and private sanitation companies. The initial reports from operators are consistent: the hydraulic hybrid is absolutely up to the task under harsh conditions in daily operation. Expectations for the savings potential have been met.

Among the first round of customers is the regional Sanitation Department of the District of Kassel. Carsten Mielke, Head of Department for Transport, is convinced of the system’s benefits. “Our waste collection vehicles consume clearly less diesel fuel than vehicles without HRB. Over an entire route we are seeing savings of from 15 to 18 percent.” This is enough, according to Mielke, to justify the acquisition of additional vehicles with the hydraulic hybrid.

HRB makes an important contribution to environmental and climate protection
After thorough testing, the Sanitation Department of Kiel also decided to purchase vehicles equipped with HRB technology. “The City Council of the state capital Kiel has set environmental protection as a priority, and we as a municipal entity want to do our part to achieve these objectives,” explains Sigfrid Schock, Head of Department Sanitation Logistics and Technology. Two vehicles are already in service on Kiel streets, and the procurement of additional trucks with the Rexroth hybrid is planned. As Schock summarizes: “The HRB is the right step in the right direction.”

HRB reduces operating costs
HRB technology from Rexroth is designed for use in heavy vehicles that have to accelerate and brake frequently. The principle of the hydraulic hybrid is as simple as it is revolutionary: instead of wasting the kinetic energy created by braking in the form of useless heat, HRB converts it into hydraulic energy and stores it in special hydraulic accumulators. The next time an acceleration cycle is required, the stored energy is fed to the travel drive again.
HRB reduces fuel consumption and with it CO2 emissions by up to 25 percent – as confirmed by a study by the ADAC Driving Safety Center Berlin-Brandenburg. Use of the HRB system even reduces brake wear by up to 50 percent. This protects the environment and reduces operating costs, according to the summary of the German automobile club. The environmentally friendly vehicles are not only good for the environment; the hydraulic hybrid also pays off economically for cities and municipalities. Schock adds: “The added cost for procuring a vehicle will be paid off in six years at the most using the hydrostatic hybrid drive.”

Series production start in October
The first refuse truck equipped with HRB was introduced to the public by Rexroth at the IAA Commercial Vehicles exhibition together with the pilot customer Haller Umweltsysteme GmbH & Co. in September 2008. Two years later in September 2010, the German testing agency TÜV granted single vehicle approval to vehicles equipped with hybrid drives from Rexroth according to Section 21 of the StVZO. Since then the road has been clear for use of the environmentally friendly HRB technology in vehicles used for waste collection on German streets. Currently such vehicles with the Rexroth-hybrid on board are in operation in over ten cities. The official start of production is October 2010.
