Industrial hydraulics factory tour highlights Bosch Rexroth products used in the renewable energy market

(Bethlehem, PA – www.boschrexroth-us.com) Officials from the Pennsylvania governor’s office and a group of journalists from Western Europe recently gathered at the Bosch Rexroth industrial hydraulics facility in Bethlehem, PA to discuss manufacturing for the renewable energy market.

Organized by the governor’s office, the visit was part of an outreach effort to highlight Pennsylvania’s manufacturing capabilities. Consumer and trade publication delegates from Germany, Spain, France, Finland, The Netherlands and the United Kingdom took a guided tour of the Bosch Rexroth hydraulics factory to learn about hydraulic components used in renewable energy projects.

Ken Hank, Bosch Rexroth executive vice president of hydraulics, led the group with a presentation about the importance of hydraulic products, particularly in wind energy generation.

“Although these projects are relatively new for North America, wind turbines have been used in Europe for years. Bosch Rexroth has taken a leadership role to develop the drive and control technology required by the wind energy project designers,” said Hank. “We are a key manufacturer serving this industry.”

Continuing developments in the field of power transmission systems and hydraulic drive and control systems have led to a production increase for wind energy turbines. Bosch Rexroth has developed a compact generator drive that saves weight over conventional gearboxes, thereby improving the efficiency of the turbine.

According to industry statistics, in only twenty years the output of wind turbines has increased nearly 100 times in the United States. Industry analysts predict an annual growth rate of eight percent for gearboxes alone by 2009 in Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and the Americas.

As part of a commitment to support development of alternative energy sources, Pennsylvania Governor Edward G. Rendell signed an agreement last year to encourage partnerships between European countries and companies like Bosch Rexroth, who are advanced industry leaders.

The factory tour gave the European journalists and government officials the chance to see a manufacturing operation that’s directly involved in the wind energy market.

Bosch Rexroth AG, part of the Bosch Group, achieved sales of approximately $6.2 billion (4.9 billion Euro) in 2006 with over 29,800 employees. Under the brand name of Rexroth the company offers all drive and control technologies, from mechanics, hydraulics and pneumatics to electronics and associated service. Over 500,000 customers worldwide utilize Rexroth’s unique technological know-how to implement their innovative and future-oriented systems and machine concepts. The global player, represented in over 80 countries, is an extensive supplier of components and systems for industrial and factory automation and mobile applications.
