Pneumatic Solutions for Resistance Welding

Bosch Rexroth Pneumatics is a world leader in High Performance Pressure Control Technology.
Whether the application requires pressure, volume, speed or force control, Rexroth has innovative solutions.
A key feature of Rexroth Electro-Pneumatic Pressure Regulators (E/Ps) is their Direct-Acting proportional solenoids. In ED02, ED07 and ED12 series, there are independent proportional solenoids for filling and exhausting. These enable the E/Ps to have:
  • Fast response to changes in load or command values.
  • High contamination resistance (50 microns filtration)
  • High Pressure relief capacity (full flow pressure relief)
  • High capability to control dynamic pressure control applications
  • Low hysteresis and high repeatability.
  • Extremely accurate feedback of actual output pressure

In addition the Rexroth E/Ps are offered as part of integrated solutions such as Pneumatic Valve manifolds with direct serial link interface to all main industrial bus protocols. These include Ethernet/IP, DeviceNet, Profibus-DP, Interbus-S, Can-Open and others. Discrete Inputs and Outputs can be interfaced through the Valve manifolds which have a highly flexible architecture. Extensive bit level and visual diagnostics minimize commissioning time for the Machine Builder and Mean Time To Repair (MTTR) for the End User.
Resistance Welding is an application where the inherent properties of Pneumatics have proven to be the optimal solution for many years.
-Compressability of the air enables fast compensation of the weld tip positions due to cavities from fit-up problems collapsing from heat generated during the welding process.
-Pneumatic devices are known for being robust, yet easy to maintain which is an added advantage for production facilities in low cost regions.
-Pneumatic devices are light-weight which is an important on Robotic applications

In Resistance welding, control over tip force and high repeatability are essential to produce high quality welds. New metal alloys used to produce high strength steels for the latest model automobiles increasingly require change in tip force as the weld in being formed. The High dynamic response of the Rexroth ED07 series E/P lends itself to these demands.

In conventional Pneumatic Weld Gun control applications, there may be proximity sensors to detect that the weld tips are in their proper position, but it is rarely the case that the force at the tips is at the required value. Inadequate tip force is a common cause of defective welds. A common cause of inadequate tip force is when the pressure feedback at the output of the E/P is assumed to be the same as the air pressure in the weld gun cylinder. Rexroth uses current monitoring of their Direct Acting E/Ps to detect air flow to enhance condition monitoring and assurance of the weld process.

An imperfection on the exterior of a good car devalues it considerably. In many Automotive Body Shops where even Electric Servo Weld Guns are used, Pneumatics is selected to provide equalization at the tips to prevent marking the metal sheets when the tips come together. Providing equalization for multiple weld gun orientations due to the effects of gravity on the gun mass has been a challenge for many years. Rexroth has combined its compact Direct-Acting ED02 series with a special sensor that detects the gun orientation to provide automatic equalization. The benefits include fast commissioning of installations where the same weld gun configuration is used in multiple stations. In many cases, automatic equalization can be provided over a greater range of orientations so that the number of welding robots required to build a body panel can be reduced. For new weld gun designs, the equalization cylinder can be downsized by manipulating the pressure at both sides of the piston to provide a greater range of balance forces.
